Tennessee Seeking To Shut Down Blackjack Sweepstakes Casinos

  • The state of Tennessee is working to ban sweepstakes casinos in the state, which are online sites that have multiple forms of currency.
  • These casinos bypass age and tax laws, making them a liability to the state.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Legislators in Tennessee have begun to crack down on online sweepstakes casinos, which are unregulated in the state.

An online sweepstakes casino usually offers two kinds of currencies; one used for “fun,” such as coins, and one that can be used to redeem real life prizes, such as gift cards.

It has been reported that multiple online Tennessee blackjack sites under the sweepstakes designation have already been shut down, a step in the right direction for the state.

Why Are Sweepstakes Casinos Bad?

Sweepstakes casinos do not have to follow the same rules as regular casinos because they are technically classified as a different type of game, one which can bypass the blackjack betting age and tax laws.

Since there is an alternative currency that allows players to play without spending real money, it is not technically considered a true casino.

Additionally, the form of currency that allows for players to win real life prizes can be purchased, similar to a traditional casino experience.

Due to the difference in age-related laws between the sweepstakes casinos and traditional casinos, players who would not be allowed to play at a traditional casino due to age restrictions would be able to do so on these sweepstakes casinos.
