Australian Blackjack Advertising Undergoing Crackdown

  • Australia is cracking down on gambling advertising with their latest reform.
  • The Australian government bans gambling ads at online platforms unless the user is logged in and over 18 years old.
  • Other key notes include a ban on celebrity and athlete gambling advertising and restrictions during live sports broadcasts.

SYDNEYAustralia is finally implementing gambling advertising reforms years after a government review recommended a complete advertising ban. While it’s nowhere near a complete gambling advertising ban, it does impact how sports betting sites and blackjack casinos in Australia advertise online, on TV, and on radio.

Gambling advertisements are banned during live sporting events occurring between 6 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., while also capped at three per hour during sports outside of those hours. Athletes and celebrities can no longer promote gambling online, TV, or radio.

Child Protection Emphasized In Aussie Gambling Ad Crackdown

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a speech on Thursday that “Letting adults have a punt if they want to, but making sure our children don’t see betting ads everywhere they look.” Protecting Australian children was a common theme across the gambling reform, which includes bans on all radio gambling advertisements during school pick-up and drop-off, as well as banning online advertising unless the user is above the age of 18 years old and has the ability to opt out.

Other bans for legal blackjack advertising and other forms of gambling from Prime Minister Albanese’s speech include:

  • Ban on cross-promotion content mixing commentary with betting odds
  • Ban of gambling advertising on jerseys, jumpers, and in stadiums
  • Ban on online Keno-type products, which consume a large number of Australian gambling losses
  • Continue reinforcing BetStop, a self-exclusion gambling program
